The Gold Rush Elixir

Warning this elixir will cure any ailment you have, including but not limited to your sense of judgement.  It is simple and easy to make and a real crowd pleaser.  Why do I claim that it has medicinal purposes?  Well honey is known for all the amazing anti-bacterial qualities it has.  Also, it is known to help soothe a sore throat.

Then there is lemon.  Hello Vitamin C and all the health benefits that anti-oxidant can bring to the table of your overall health!  Finally there is well the alcohol which once upon a time was thought to help aid in health.  Don’t quote me but wasn’t Jagermeister once a medication?  And who hasn’t taken NyQuil fully knowing the alcohol in that medication is part of the reason you will get a “better nights sleep”.

The Gold Rush

So here is where logic becomes….fuzzy.  Logically it is flu season and the media has been scaring the crap out of the general public.  So if I combine all of these three “medicinal” ingredients together, just maybe I can stay healthy.  Add in the fact I had a few guests over for dinner and there you go, we have an aperitif of the highest quality!

Lemon, Honey and Bourbon

This batch will happily serve 6-8 people and they are strong little happy drinks, so pour with either care or abandon, however you and your guests roll!  I served them over ice, although warm in a nice coffee mug would be delightful too.  But, if you warmed them up I would serve it after dinner instead of before and you must sit around a fireplace with a fuzzy blanket to warm your wintery toes!

I will not take credit for the original idea…That will be going to The Kitchn with their own version of the Gold Rush.  They also make it more to order, but I find that the batch was well received from my friends and family.

Batch of The Gold Rush

The Gold Rush Elixir

  • 2 cups Water
  • 1/3 cup Honey
  • Juice of 2 Lemons (and use the rind for garnish)
  • 2 cups Bourbon
  1. Heat the water in the microwave for 1 and a half to two minutes.  Just enough to be hot but not boiling.
  2. Pour the 1/3 cup of honey into the hot water and stir to dissolve.
  3. Use a pairing knife and cut off lemon rind sections (be careful not to cut the pith or white part of the lemon).  Reserve the rind for garnish and then cut the lemon in half and squeeze our the juice for the drink.
  4. Have the honey water mixture come to room temperature.  Then add the honey water into a pitcher alone with the bourbon and fresh squeezed lemon juice.  Stir to combine.
  5. Fill your glass of choice with ice.  Pour the beverage over ice.  Squeeze a slice of lemon peel and then put on top of the drink for garnish.

Now go and make a fabulous Gold Rush of your own.  Remember to drink with care and share with friends…Clink!
